FAQ

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy involves sitting together with a therapist and talking. Therapists are trained to help facilitate communication, reveal symptoms that are causing you distress and help you understand what you may want or need to change in your life.

What is the difference between counseling and psychotherapy?

Counseling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably. However, counseling tends to be often brief and focuses on behavior. Generally, psychotherapy is used for longer term of treatment and focuses on gaining insight into your way of being rather than on a specific problem. At Community Psychological Services, our therapists function within both frameworks. You and your therapist will determine the treatment goals.

What should I expect from my initial telephone contact?

Our director will call and ask for a brief description of your issues, discuss financial arrangements and your scheduling needs. She will tell you who will call you to arrange your first session based on which therapist is best suited to your individual needs.

What should I expect during my first therapy session?

Because your information intake is dealt with during the call with our director, when you arrive for your first session, you and your therapist can immediately get to know each other. Your therapist will ask what you are experiencing, about any symptoms you have and what you would like to change and will discuss treatment goals with you.

How long can I expect my therapy to last?

The length of therapy is always up to you. You may prefer a short-term approach that is goal-oriented or a longer treatment plan that addresses new insights and self- growth.

Will my therapist prescribe medicine for my condition?

No, therapists cannot prescribe medications, however, when a prescription is needed, our therapists will work with a psychiatrist who can do so.

Are my therapy sessions confidential?

All sessions are confidential in accordance with the law governing privacy.

Does Community Psychological Services take medical insurance?

CPS accepts most PPO insurance plans. You will only make your co-payments and we will bill the insurance company directly for the remainder charges.

How does therapy scheduling work?

Therapy can take place at a regularly scheduled time. It is usually once a week although sessions can be more frequent. Our center offers daytime, evening and Saturday appointments.

How does couples therapy work?

A therapist will help a couple communicate in a safe, guided environment. Your therapist will help you learn to communicate calmly and clearly so you can each express yourself and understand one another.

Does therapy cost more for couples or families?

No. There are no additional charges for couples or family therapy sessions.
